Isaiah 34:5-15

5 For ^aMy sword has drunk its fill in heaven;
Behold it shall descend for judgment upon ^bEdom,
And upon the people whom I have ^cdesignated for destruction.
6 The sword of the Lord is filled with blood,
It drips with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats,
With the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For the Lord has a sacrifice in ^dBozrah,
And a great slaughter in the land of ^eEdom.
7 ^fWild oxen will also ^{▼▼Lit go down}fall with them
And ^hyoung bulls with strong ones;
So their land will be ⁱsoaked with blood,
And their dust ^{▼▼Lit made fat}become greasy with fat.
8 For the Lord has a day of ^kvengeance,
A year of retribution for the ^{▼▼Or controversy}cause of Zion.
9 ^{▼▼I.e., Edom’s}Its streams will be turned into pitch,
And its loose earth into ⁿbrimstone,
And its land will become burning pitch.
10 It will ^onot be extinguished night or day;
Its ^psmoke will go up forever.
From ^qgeneration to generation it will be desolate;
^rNone will pass through it forever and ever.
11 But ^{▼▼Or owl; or jackdaw
,} ^tpelican and hedgehog will possess it,
And ^{▼▼Or great horned owl}owl and raven will dwell in it;
And He will stretch over it the ^vline of ^{▼▼Or formlessness}desolation
And the ^{▼▼Lit stones of void}plumb line of emptiness.
12 Its nobles --there is ^yno one there
Whom they may proclaim king--
And all its officials will be ^znothing.
13 Thorns will come up in its ^aafortified towers,
Weeds and thistles in its fortified cities;
It will also be a haunt of ^abjackals
And a habitat of ostriches.
14 The desert ^accreatures will meet with the ^{▼▼Or howling creatures}wolves,
The ^{▼▼Or goat demon
,} ^afgoat also will cry to its kind.
Yes, the ^{▼▼Or a demon; Heb Lilith}night-bird will settle there
And will find herself a resting place.
15 The tree snake will make its nest and lay eggs there,
And it will hatch and gather them under its ^{▼▼Lit shade}protection.
Yes, ^aithe ^{▼▼Or kites}hawks will be gathered there,
Every one with its kind.
